make – bags

late entry

NOTE: I wrote this entry late Friday night but I was not able to publish it. I was away all weekend. We had a great road trip down South. Pictures coming soon.

I have been looking for freezer paper for almost a year now. People on Craftster and other craft forums recommend freezer paper for easy stenciling fun.

Well, we don’t have that here.

For this order, I used acetate to make the heart stencil. I had to cut it slooowly because my scisssors could use a day or two of sharpening. I have a sharper pair but the aliens stole them. And yes, we have an xacto knife but I have no idea how to use it. Newbie’s sentiments, I know. Well, the bag turned out great anyway.

This is a simple tote bag. One side is green, the other is pink. The color scheme reminds me of my Zen MP3 player.

Oh yeah, congratulations to Uzi for winning 3rd place at the Jose Joya Awards last Friday. I will now call you “Joya Awardee” all the time. If you guys are interested, here is his entry, Sutured Contussion

aimed for zakka

For Christmas, Uzi and I exchanged gifts that were relevant to the advancement of our skills or, in his case, talents. I got him a book about the Dada Movement in Art. He got me loads and loads of Japanese craft magazines.

I love them so much. Have I mentioned that I love sniffing paper? Whenever I go to a bookstore, I would open a book I like and sniff its pages. Of course, I do this in a deserted area because other shoppers might get freaked out.

The magazines inspired me to create zakka-like bags for my shop. I came up with simple totes made of very thick canvas. I added about 4-inch strips of Lecien linen on the front middle part of the bag. I then sewed felt appliques, the designs of which were inspired by the prints of the Lecien fabric.

This one has prints of a city grid, dogs, buses, a few buildings, and paw prints.IMG_6703.jpg picture by miwiyam

The felt applique I made was a red paw print.IMG_6704.jpg picture by miwiyam

And here is another with the same linen strip.IMG_6691.jpg picture by miwiyam

And the wheel-less bus applique. I couldn’t find dark brown felt, unfortunately.

These bags were a lot of fun to make and they flew off the virtual shelves of my shop (thank you, guys!)

A friend of a friend asked me to customize hers by adding Katakana characters of the name of her favorite Japanese band.

Sensing a pettern here?

I will probably make messenger bag versions of these. I also plan to make loud and huge bags for summer. Hopefully those would be well-received, too.

i will have a bag band

I am watching the music video of Colbie Caillat right now. Her acoustic guitar looks sexy. I will probably make an acoustic guitar bag, too.

There is no stopping me!

In fact, here is the piano bag that I made for Alphae’s sister.

Doesn’t the strap look like a g-clef? I realized that only after I took the picture. Here are the keys:

Bag details: flat, made of black denim, with black lining.

i was six when the 80s ended…

but here is a picture of me “reliving” the days.

My friend/housemate decided to have an 80s themed party to celebrate her birthday. She’s the one in the middle. I am the shortest in the picture. (In real life, too.) I’m wearing a short vintage knit dress. A wide black belt helps seal the 80s look. Pauline (orange dress) and Anthony (guy in aviator sunglasses) are definitely the trendiest ones. Pauline borrowed her dress from her mom, who told her that it was very expensive during her time.

For something craft-related, I have finally figured out how to sew a drawstring bag with lining. Reversible to boot! I can imagine you veteran sew-ers (?) rolling your eyes over my accomplishment. I will make more.
