how to sew a guitar bag

actionshot.jpg picture by miwiyam

That’s right, I made my own fender guitar bag. Uzi has not seen it and hopefully, he’ll be delighted when he finally does, wherever he is in Manila.

Darn, I miss him.

Well, I made a tutorial for those crafting-inclined souls out there. HAPPY SEWING!  PLEASE DO NOT SELL ANY GUITAR BAG THAT YOU END UP MAKING. THANKS.

*UPDATE (Suggested by Renee heehee)

MATERIALS NEEDED: half a meter of thick fabric for the body (i used thick pink canvas for mine); fabric for the lining; fabric in contrasting color for the scratchplate; bias tape; silver-y fabric; buttons; silver thread; grosgrain for the strap; adjuster for the strap.

1. Print a guitar image onto an A4 paper. Trace your image; 2 for the body, 2 for lining, 2 for your scratchplate.

2. Out of silver-y fabric, cut and sew rectangle and tear-shaped pieces. The rectangle would be your whammy bar while the tear-shaped piece would serve as your input jack.

3. Take your scratchplate pieces, right sides together, and sew all the way around. Leave a 2-inch gap for turning inside out.

4. After this, clip all the way around so that the curves would be better-defined. Turn inside out and sew on top of the front body of your bag. Use the image you printed for the position of the scratchplate.

5. Now sew the whammy bar and the input jack. Take three strips of bias tape (or any fabric that matches the color of your scratchplate). Their length should be the same as your whammy bar. These strips would be your single-coil pickups. Position them according to the image and sew. Mark the parts of the scratchplate where the screws are. Embroider these with silver thread. Handsew circles on the strips you just added. Remember, these circles should be aligned.

6. Mark the volume and tone controls. Sew on buttons for these.

7. Now position your front and back pieces, right sides together. Sew from the highest points of the curved tops on both sides. Do the same to the lining, leaving a gap at the bottom. (If you want, you can add a pocket or two before doing this.)

8. Turn the outer body inside out and place it inside the lining. Sew the opening of your bag.

9. Pull out your outer body through the gap at the bottom of the lining.

10. Your bag is starting to take shape. Topstitch the top part.

11. Attach one end of the strap with the rectangular ring for the adjuster. Sew the other end. Do not forget to sew the gap in your lining shut.

12. And you’re done!

100th post + blog break

sewingmachinexmas.jpg picture by miwiyam

This is my 100th post. Wow. Yay for me.

And in this post, I want to say “See you next year.” I will be taking a bit of a blogging break so that I can enjoy my Christmast vacation. My parents will be here by this weekend and I think my Mother would spend her days here shopping. And I, her youngest, will be tasked with keeping her company.

Happy holidays, everyone.

my week

I made my sister’s party dress. I pat my own back for pulling off a backless piece.

My old sewing scissors retired. Here he is imparting words of wisdom to the noob. The new one is smaller and lighter.

We finally had our pictures taken with the wonderful Christmas lights at Asiatown IT Park.

quid pro quo, clarice

I have finally figured out what to give people this year. I may be cheating, sort of, but I have my reasons. One of which is I no longer like the dress I planned on sewing for the office Christmas party and I need all the time to break through this frustrating place called square one.

I did start sewing the dress but I kept hearing scary words, entangled with the noises my sewing machine was making. The words were “You would look like you’re going to a funeral in this dress.” I could go for the goth look but I aim to look festive. I’m too old to feign juvenile indifference at a party.

When those words are not running through my head, here are what I keep hearing, “Wait for your parents and let them offer to have your TV fixed.” Yes, my TV conked out. And hopefully, my parents visit us for Christmas.

Apparently, I got myself a holiday-induced schizophrenia.

if only they come cheap

All I want for Christmas is a dress form. Fitting and sneaking in an unfinished dress over my underwear into the hallway mirror is getting old. I am starting to forget my excuse if ever any of my male roommates catch me in the hallway. It sounds like “Oh, they’ve seen me in a bikini when we went to the beach anyway.” How lame.

A dress form would be wonderful.

A dress form inside my room would give me nightmares.

I should try making my own. This method sounds messy, I love it.

guitar bag [not really]

IMG_6186.jpg picture by miwiyam

This is not a bag for carrying a guitar. This is a bag that looks like a guitar. A Fender Stratocaster to be exact.

I made this for my boyfriend. It is very small. In fact, only his PSP and a small notebook can fit inside it. His fist barely fits the opening. I offered to make a bigger version but he insisted on having a small guitar-shaped bag.

Let me just say that making this one was fun and frustrating at the same time. I winged everything, except the appearance of the guitar. We actually had to print an image from Google for that. The frustrating part was my crazy idea to finish the bag in one night. It’s been proven that the later into the night you sew, the more mistakes you make. Maybe it’s just me.

But the bag turned out really well and I cannot wait to make my own. Something in red and black. And with a bigger opening to accommodate a paperback.
