This is a fun project for beginners. The fun factor will be doubled if you use fun fabric, in my opinion. So I used this hippo print Ikea fabric that the ever-lovely Emmich sent me a few months back.
Okay, on with the tutorial.
Materials
- 2 rectangular fabrics – length: your desired length / width: hip size + 14″
- garter: waist size – 1.5 inches
- bias tape for trim
The width of your garter should be taken into consideration when cutting the allowance of the upper parts of your fabrics.

Attaching the Trim
Take one of the rectangular pieces, mark the hem and make that a reference for where you will sew the trim. Mine was 1.5 inches from the hem. After pinning them into place, sew. Do the same to the other rectangular piece.

Sewing the Body
Take the two pieces and sew them, right sides together. Make sure that the trims meet perfectly. After that, hem your partially-done skirt.

Sewing the Waistline
Fold the waistline to the wrong side. The width of my waistline was 1 inch because the garter I used had a width of .75 inch.
Pin and sew. Leave a 2-inch gap.

Now pin one end of the garter to the gap.

Puncture the other end with a paper clip and secure it by wrapping the paper clip in clear tape. I don’t mean to go all MacGyver on you but in all my years of sewing, this method is by far the best way to insert garter or ribbon through any folded part of a project. You can use the safety pin but that is a pricking nightmare in the making.

Insert the end with the paper clip through the folded edge and pull it until you reach the other side and got both ends of the garter together.
Remove the safety pin and paper clip and sew the ends of the garter. Pull into the fold and sew the gap of the fold shut.

Pat yourself on the back because you, baby, are done!
This day was quite stormy. I wanted to wear the skirt to the post office today because I was sure that if there is anything that can make a day less dreary, it would be a hippo skirt. But it was too cold to be wearing a short skirt.

And I like how you styled it as well.
I just have to say wow. I love the cute little hippos!! This is adorable on you and you totally rock it. Now if i were to wear a hippo skirt…um no! But the color, the trim, its so cute on you! :) You know how to pull an outfit together too.
Thanks! The hippo print is just so so cute. :D
I’m sure you’ll look great in a hippo skirt! But probably not for one of your wedding dinners/parties. Haha
That print is so cute! Thanks so much for this, I’ll be linking.
LOVE this – thank you so much!
You’re welcome. Happy sewing! :)
Yay thanks! Happy Thanksgiving to you! :)
Oh, so cute!! This outfit is adorable. When it’s extra cold out, I like to wear a knit dress
that goes above the knee over my pants. I wear thermals and my thighs seem to be
cold anyways. But when I wear a knit dress to cover them they are not cold anymore.
Thanks for the tutorial!!
God Bless You and Yours!!!
