handmade and the city

My dear Philippines has many wonderful crafters. I have interviewed some of them for the blog. We also have our fair share of handmade supporters. While we may not be very progressive as far as independent shopping is concerned, many people here do appreciate uniquely designed and lovingly handmade merchandise. Fantastic for a handmade seller like me, of course. And even more fantastic? We are seeing many e-commerce platforms that cater to handmade crop up.

One of these is PHINDIES. Theirs is a unique platform, giving buyers a chance to buy handmade items at a discounted price but only for a period of seven days.

This week, I am one of the featured sellers over at PHINDIES. I am selling my rectangular corner tab pouches at a discounted price of P120 each.

Choosing “lokal” is always a good idea. Choosing 100% handmade? Even better.

Check out the pouches HERE. And while you’re there, get to know the other amazing handmade sellers that have been featured on PHINDIES as well.

Thanks for your support!

tutorial: turn a cat litter container into a sewing pattern organizer

When I moved my craft area to the living room, I was reminded of the fact that my sewing pattern organization is all sorts of ridiculous. They were in various envelopes, inserted in craft magazines, rubbing shoulders with my scrapbook paper. I had to take control of the situation by making this filer-type storage.

Here’s how I turned this cat litter box into a DIY sewing pattern organizer:

First, you will need: a cat litter box (mine was the 28-lb one by Arm & Hammer), craft knife, wrapping paper, clear tape, paper tape (optional), metal ruler

1. Cut the top part and about 3/4 of the side of your cat litter box. These boxes are tough so you will need to be careful with your cutting. Try to be as precise as possible. Use a metal ruler for guide.

If you follow me on Pinterest, you probably have an idea what my dream house is. Open floor plan (loft optional), drowning in colors and knick-knacks, eclectic, rustic, and unapologetically Bohemian. A studio or a workshop that doubles as a living space is my dream home, to be exact.

Which is why we transformed the general living area of our house into one giant working section. In other words, I brought my mess central into the largest part of the house.

i’m new at this embroidery thing

[First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who greeted me happy birthday on my previous post and joined my giveaway. Hello, hello to new readers and recent de-lurkers.]

Many crafty people start their love affair with sewing by way of embroidery or knitting. I seem to have skipped these stepping stones and moved right to making clothes using the sewing machine. Sure I did cross-stitching in high school but they didn’t count; I did only one and a half single-color patterns.

But after about a decade of being embroiled in this adult world, I find myself wishing that I learned everything I needed to learn about embroidery when I was younger. Because, man, it is so relaxing!

Here is my latest:

This is probably my most ambitious embroidery project to date. I can imagine you laughing at this silliness. I laugh with you, so no worries. Counting the banner I made for Krissy and perhaps one or two smaller projects, this is honestly my best-looking embroidery. It’s of my skeleton key tattoo (refer to my drawing on the banner of this blog) and is made purely of back stitches. Because let’s face it, this is the only stitch I can manage. Ha!

I cannot wait to make more. Perhaps I will finally be able to put my copy of Sublime Stitching to good use. Any tips for a beginner?

Not related to embroidery but to the design, here are fun skeleton key-inspired DIY ideas:
